AUTHORIZATION FOR HONG KONG MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION
(PHD IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION)

  1. The Hong Kong Management Association is the sole registered Local Operator of the program in Hong Kong, and the BSU Hong Kong Office has authorized HKMA as the exclusive education partner to deliver the course. BSU Hong Kong Office serves as the coordinating office between the University and the local operator;
  2. As the registered Local Operator in Hong Kong, HKMA shall be responsible in the recruitment and delivery of programs of their students enrolled in the Ph.D in Business Administration;
  3. The BSU Hong Kong Office is in-charge of all administrative and academic matters pertaining to all International programs of the University offered in Hong Kong, China, Macau and other parts of Southeast Asia.
  4. The BSU Hong Kong Office and the HKMA are closely coordinating the academic and administrative matters pertaining to the Ph.D. in Business Administration program of the University. All academic records of students are maintained by the BSU Hong Kong Office. Oral Defense schedules and Graduation are also organized by the BSU Hong Kong Office.

Course Structure
The program is divided into 4 parts including core subjects, major subjects, electives and dissertation. The total credits of this program are 60 which each subject consists of 3 credits and the dissertation consists of 12 credits.

Language of Study
The program shall be conducted in English and write their dissertation in the English language.

Study Duration
The standard duration for a candidate to complete the PhD degree is 3 years .The minimum time allowed for a candidate to complete the PhD Degree is 2 years, should he or she have been granted block exemption from the coursework requirements.
The maximum time allowed for a candidate to complete the PhD Degree is 5 years . A candidate who wishes to extend candidature must seek permission from the Program Director.

Mode of Study
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration course will be delivered by a distance mode which is implemented through compulsory lectures, optional tutorials and study group discussion.  Study materials include study guides, prescribed textbooks and reference books, reading and/or e-learning materials provided by the University.
On top of distance-learning Hong Kong students will be provided with the following supports to facilitate their studies:

  • - Lectures -
    Actual classroom lectures will be provided to students to be lead by professors drawn from local academics and business leaders.  This will provide students a forum for open discussions and interchanges of ideas within the class.
  • - Tutorials -
    Interaction between a small group of students and the tutor will also be provided to give the students a chance to discuss and share their personal ideas and interest with their professor regarding the subject specialization of their choice.
  • - Study Group Discussions -
    Out of timetable meetings will be organized for candidates working in a common interest group.  The group discussions will provide a forum for group members to enhance critical thinking, analysis and synthesis with peers.   Career Professionals will be invited to share their knowledge and experience in their field of profession.
  • - Dissertation  Supervisors -
    Students who have completed their coursework will be allocated a Supervisor to support their dissertation work.  Direct supervision will be provided by the Dissertation  Supervisors in the preparation of their Dissertation.

CORE COURSES

BA 300 Philosophical Foundations of Business Administration
Attempts to provide business managers with strong philosophical foundations consisting of research, theory-oriented and inter-disciplinary approaches such that they develop their own principles and theories that may provide consistent guidelines for their management actions.

BA 302 Research Designs and Methodology
Consists of a broad array of research designs, procedures and techniques as they apply to management. It develops awareness of these principles and skills to facilitate critical thinking, scholarly thoroughness, balanced judgment and originality in the examination of pertinent issues in the field of modern management.

Discusses corresponding survey methods, which includes sampling procedures, data processing, and analysis of data and survey results. Requires project study and/or dissertation proposal.

BA 305 Dissertation Seminar
This course initiates the student into the work of conceptualizing and planning a dissertation topic. The student learns how to choose an area, develop a research topic in the area, formulate a conceptual and theoretical framework for a research and designing the needed experimental and/or survey. The output of the course is a draft of a dissertation proposal for review and critique.

BA 301 Advanced Statistics
Utilizes sophisticated statistical tools such as multiple correlation and regression analysis, multivariate analysis of variance, canonical correlation analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling, conjoint analysis, structural equation modeling, quantitative techniques and non-parametric statistics which are applicable in business, public and educational management.

 

 

MAJOR COURSES

BA 310 Marketing Management
The course trains the student in the development and use of marketing models for different marketing decision area, from market analysis to impact of the different component elements of the marketing mix. It is assumed that the student has taken a masteral level course in Marketing Management.

BA 316 Productions/Operations Management
Covering issues and practices in planning, organizing, controlling and assembling resources for operation and production, this course focuses on operations strategy in relation to business strategy, planning of structures (plant layout and facilities, production capacity), and flows and schedules

BA 325 Risk Management
A study of risk management in the two phases: risk planning which includes identification of risks, assessment of profitability and impact, and selecting the risks to be managed, and risk control-risk avoidance and/or risk

BA 324 Management Information and Control System
A course dealing with the use of It systems for managerial decision-making. The student learns not only how to use the system but also to participate in the preparation, design and operation of the system by learning the procedures of system development from needs analysis in of the new system control.

BA 311 Organization Theory
Examines the contextual evolution of organizational theories up to the present, in the end arming administrators with theories, tools and techniques to manage change on the individual, group, and organization and even on the global levels. Discusses characteristics and foundations of organizational development processes, change intervention and the various planned change models. In part it deals with the formulation and development of individual and institutional ethical beliefs, character, sense of importance and worth as it effects the decision making process and leadership vision of administrations as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization and its constituency.

BA 312 Microeconomic Analysis
Utilizes microeconomic theory in managerial decision-making. Demonstrate the role of economics in other disciplines such as finance, marketing, business policy and quantitative analysis.

BA 313 Human Resource Development
Theories, techniques, approaches, strategies and issues in human resource development or people development designed to achieve goals at organizational (micro) and national (macro) levels within the context of national development with emphasis on acquiring skills in planning and conducting an agency HRD program.

BA 314 Financial Management
This course covers the concepts and the analytical techniques used for making three major decisions that together determine the value of the firm: investment decisions; financing decisions; and dividend decisions. The emphasis of this course is the application of the concepts and techniques to real world case studies.

 

 

ELECTIVES / COGNATES

BA 320 Computer Operations
With the rapid penetration of information technology (IT) into every nook and corner of organizations, managers need to know how to use IT systems profitably. This course is intended for managers to acquire enough knowledge to not only use these systems but more importantly, to be able to communicate with IT personnel in the areas of systems analysis and design, system maintenance, and systems development.

BA 321 Social Responsibility and Executive Management
A discussion of past and current concepts of social responsibility as affected or demanded by the environment. Emphasis is on the need for impact assessment for decisions at the executive level that affect the environment and society.

BA 322 Entrepreneurship
A study on how new ventures are formulated, planned and operationalized. It includes a discussion of sources of entrepreneurship, characteristics of entrepreneurs, sources of capital for entrepreneurial ventures, and the impact of entrepreneurship on the business environment and on the national economy.

BA 323 Management Services
This course consists of a look into the world of management consulting, a not-so-well-know area of management careers. Discussion will cover such areas as, what are the specific areas of management consulting services, the ethical issues and the problems.

BA 326 Development Administration
A course that familiarizes the management student with the concepts of development administration. The main purpose is to make managers aware of the role of private enterprise in national development and to prepare them to include this factor into their decision-making.

BA 304 Foreign Language
The doctoral students knowledge is also expanded in the area of languages so as to prepare him or her for further studies by developing an amount of proficiency in a foreign language both oral and written.

BA 303 Development Economics
A course to integrate into the managers stock knowledge economic development issues and theories as applied in developing countries. The purpose of this is to prepare the manager to factor into his decision-making, including planning, the impact of government policies in the area of development. It is assumed that the student has taken a basic course in Economics, or Economic Analysis at the masteral level.

BA 315 Corporate Planning
Deals with the formulation and evaluation of short and long-range strategic plans at the corporate level. Problems, issues and practices involved in establishing corporate objectives, strategies and policies considering the existing and projected economic, social and political scenario are analyzed and evaluated. The portfolio approach and parenting approach are analyzed and compared.
